GRM BLOG WORKSHEET: WORDS DO MATTER! (Post157)

TUESDAY, MARCH 28

POST 157

The chief virtue that language can have is clearness, and nothing detracts from it so much as the use of unfamiliar words.

- Galen

Before we get too far into our year of focus on spiritual recovery, I want to emphasize the realness of communication as a key role in recovery.  Whether we are working on our own spiritual recovery or helping others, the words we use can either clarify or mystify.  Do the words like redemption and righteous, turn off our attention to the speaker (or author) for lack of understanding – especially when it comes to recovery?

And how about that word bless?  We clergy say it A LOT!  Yet this general-sounding term may even be interpreted by the listener as a form of empty religious talk or even a quick dismissal.  Then, should we not say the  bless-you expression? No.  My point is to use it in the context of the situation.  I will pray for God to bless you as you …  gives a personal message that you have heard what the other person has said.

Then too, if we are working on a particular spiritual aspect of our own lives, for example forgiveness, do we understand what to forgive means?   Perhaps, consultation with one’s counselor or clergy could help to navigate the process of forgiveness.

Words do matter – what, how, when and why we say them can divide, discourage, or dampen the spirit … or they can deepen hope and understanding as well as dispel fear, anger, and confusion.  Again, whether it is our own situational issue or that of another clarifying our spiritual-talk can enhance faith and open further those doors to recovery!

GRM BLOG WORKSHEET: TERMS AND EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH

Early on, I wrote a number of special Worksheets for the GRM BLOG that contained

·       Thought Questions to ponder

·       Writing Exercises

·       Help-Lists (for helping oneself)

You can check them out:  Posts 27, 31, 33, and 74,  It’s been awhile since I’ve included one!

DIRECTIONS

The following terms/expressions are often spoken in faith communities but may not be well understood.  With help from dictionaries (Webster’s as well as faith-oriented dictionaries) and thesaurus, write meaning, synonyms, antonyms, and contexts (as used in prayers, devotionals, etc.) for the following words that you particularly want to explore.  You will probably add other wordings to the list!
